Ganesh Pyne was born in Calcutta and he graduated with a diploma from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1959. He has experimented with various media and his works are mainly in small format, yet have remarkable intensity. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the First International Triennale, New Delhi (1968), the Paris Biennale (1969) and the Second International Triennale, New Delhi (1971).
Pyne received The Birla Academy of Art and Culture Award in 1973 and Shiromoni Purashkar in 1985. He has had five solo shows and has featured his works in shows such as Contemporary Indian Painting, Germany (1975); Indische Kunst Heute, Darmstadt (1982); and Image Beyond Image, Contemporary Indian Paintings from the Glenbarra Art Museum, Japan (1997).
