Anindita Singh is a post-graduate in English literature from the Calcutta University. She is a self-taught artist. Most of her lessons have been watching and talking to people at Arts Acre, Calcutta. Her work has been continuously exhibited since 1994 in her solo shows and group shows at Calcutta, New Delhi and Mumbai. She lives and works in Calcutta. An attempt, To me half the mystery of the Universe lies at the secret corners of human heart. I try to explore and perceive that unknown facet of human mind which offers unknowingly reflect itself in trifle gestures, facial expressions or even in a vacant look and such expressions filtered through my perception are recurrent in my works. It seems that human life or more precisely human relation is an unpredictable mélange of light and darkness, warmth and indifference and that of love and loneliness and such relations both rooted in the family and elsewhere always make me think. Women spontaneously find an important place in my paintings. Sometime they are simplified human forms or sometime they are seen carefully with extravagant detail. I often intrude into the innocence of a child’s world and enjoy each and every movement that is unperturbed by worldly maturity. My painted characters with their large eyes are presented as curious onlookers of this human drama in which they themselves are active participants. I use red, orange, burnt sienna to paint their various expressions and emotion, on the other hand purity of lemon yellow, blue or mauve are being used to reflect the child like innocence.
