K. G. Subramanyn

K. G. SUBRAMANYAN (b.1924 - 2016) was born in north Kerala in 1924, he received his training at the Kala Bhavan, Shantinetan, the University founded by Rabindranath Tagore, where he was influenced by Benode Behari Mukherjee. In the 1940's he was involved with the struggle for Independence and in the 1950's he studied at the Salde School of Fine Arts, London. He held his first solo show in Delhi in 1955. In 1966 he was the recipient of the J. D. Rockefeller III Fund Fellowship, he has also been awarded several academic posts-head of the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda and has held a visiting lectureship at the Universities of Mac Master and Toronto and more recently he returned to Shantiniketan as Head of the Fine Arts Faculty. In 1965, he received the National Award. His works are exhibited in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi and the Tata Research Institute, Mumbai. He is an outstanding art historian and has written a number of books on the modern movement in Indian Art. He currently lives and works in Shantiniketan. He died 29 June 2016.
