Jehangir Sabavala

JEHANGIR A SABAVALA (b.1922 - 2011) Jehangir Sabavala was born in 1922 in Bombay. He studied at the Sir J.J.School of Art. In 1945 he left for Europe to study at the Heatherley School of Art London and then at the Academie Julian, the Academie Andre Lhote and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris. Since his first exhibition in 1951, he has had more than twenty-five one-man shows. He has also participated in important exhibitions including Art Now in India, Arts Council of Great Britain (1965), Asian Artists Exhibition, Fukuoka Art Museum Tokyo (1979), and Modern Indian Paintings Hirschhorn Museum Washington DC, (1982). In 1980, The Reasoning Vision: Jehangir Sabavala's Painterly Universe was published by Tata McGraw-Hill. A Monograph Jehangir Sabavala was published in 1984 by the Lalit Kala Academy. Colours of Absence, a film on his life and work won the National Award in 1994 and a biography "Pilgrim, Exile, Sorcerer - the painterly evolution of Jehangir Sabavala was published by Eminence Designs Pvt.Ltd. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India, 1977. Has held a solo show at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai 2002. Jehangir Sabavala lives and works in Mumbai. He died 2 September 2011.
