Karl Antao was born in 1966 and completed his graduation in Applied Arts from the Sir J.J.School Institute, Mumbai. For five years from 1991 to 1996, he was the Head of the Department of Sculpture, Kanoria Centre for Arts. His solo shows include, among others, the ones at the L.C. Art Gallery, Ahmedabad (1989) and at the Hutheesing Visual Art Centre, Ahmedabad (1993) He has participated in several Group shows including 'The Drawn Image show", Cymroza Art Gallery, (1995), and 'the Harmony Show', Nehru Centre, Mumbai (1997). He is also the recipient of the Bombay Art Society Award (1993) and the Bendre Husian Award (1995). Antao's sculptures are attempts at revisualising the figure of Man in various critical moments of crisis and as such they are engaged in an intimate wrestle with the overbearing idea of the iconic.
